The powerful text Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (Out of the depths have I cried unto thee) was the perfect choice of text for JS Bach to set to music following the colossal fire which swept through the medieval town of Mülhausen just before his appointment as the new organist.

This concert explores several fascinating and moving responses to this text through the compositions of one of the fathers of the German Baroque, Heinrich Schütz, as well as French and English contemporaries Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Henry Purcell.

Purcell Remember not, Lord, our offences, Z 50
Charpentier De profundis, H. 189
