In this new series, you’ll get to know OBS’s principal musicians. In the style of a Q&A, you’ll learn about their musical journeys so far, highlights with OBS, what they like to do in their free time, and more.

Next, we have organist Dónal McCann.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your musical journey to date.

My first musical experiences were as a chorister at St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast and then in Dublin where I learned piano and organ with some inspiring teachers. As an organist, Bach’s music is core repertoire, but learning his music was never a chore for me; I devoured his music as a teenager, and I remember giving a recital of the six trio sonatas whilst at school. After completing my degree and organ scholarship at King’s, Cambridge, I was Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford, which was where I first encountered OBS; the one through-line in my career has been Bach’s music, and exploring this repertoire continues to be extraordinarily fulfilling.

How long have you been performing with OBS and what has been a highlight?

My first performance with OBS was the Easter Festival 2021, and I was struck by the quality of my fellow musicians and the depth with which we worked on the music. I was also impressed with OBS’ commitment during the uncertainties of the pandemic. Since then, each concert brings its own interest and challenges. My highlights would be our eye-opening New York trip in 2024, but I also love our smaller performances which allow each individual musician to show their abilities and skill. More recently, I’ve very much enjoyed directing a few concerts and all that comes with that!

What do you enjoy most about working with OBS?

Undoubtedly, working with my fellow musicians, who are unfailingly inspiring as people and performers. I think the greatest value of this, in performance, is our willingness to take risks which, more often than not, pay off! Having played with the group for several years, I have seen cohorts of choral scholars pass through the scheme and use the skills they have learned to build professional careers. Supporting the next generation of musicians is a core part of what makes OBS so special.

What do you like to do when you’re not performing?

Not much! My free time is mostly filled with music, and I wouldn’t have it any other way – I’m usually planning, listening or, when I can, composing. I also like to go back to Belfast to see my family. Otherwise, my day-to-day work at the Winchester College Choral Foundation keeps me busy.
