Oxford Bach Soloists is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Grahl as Artistic Director, beginning in the 2025–26 season.

Steven is a distinguished conductor and keyboard player, currently serving as Director of Music at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Conductor of Schola Cantorum of Oxford. He was previously Organist (Director of Music) at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral. His wide-ranging experience includes work with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Britten Sinfonia, Instruments of Time and Truth, and The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble.

Steven’s relationship with the music of J.S. Bach is both longstanding and deeply informed. From singing the Johannes-Passion as a chorister to conducting, performing, and recording across the composer’s repertoire, he brings a wealth of insight and passion to this new role. His commitment to historically informed performance and to nurturing the next generation of musicians aligns strongly with OBS’s mission.

This appointment follows Steven’s well-received direction of the ensemble’s 2025 Christmas Oratorio performance. His thoughtful interpretation, collaborative spirit, and musical leadership left a lasting impression.
Steven comments

“It is a delight and an honour to be appointed Artistic Director of Oxford Bach Soloists. The vitality and collegiality of their music-making is widely admired, and generations of scholars have benefited from the transformative educational experiences they have received performing with this group. I am excited to build on the tremendous vision and energy of OBS founder Tom Hammond-Davies, and to work with musicians, staff and trustees to create memorable, well-informed, and inspiring performances.”

Katie Ambrose, Executive Director of Oxford Bach Soloists, adds:

“I am absolutely delighted to be taking the organisation forward with Steven. His blend of musical insight and practical leadership makes him ideally suited to this next chapter in OBS’s development. I very much look forward to working with him.”

Steven will formally take up the post from the beginning of the 2025–26 season, shaping future programmes and helping to develop the artistic and educational ambitions of the organisation.
