SUMMARY:The Heavens Are Telling
DESCRIPTION:J. S. Bach’s Cantatas for the Second Sunday after Trinity \nAch Gott\, vom Himmel sieh darein BWV 2\n(Oh God\, Look down from Heaven) \nDie Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes BWV 76\n(The Heavens are telling the glory of God) \nMotet: “Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf” BWV 226\n(The Spirit helps us in our weakness) \nTickets £10 with a free programme \nTwo of J. S. Bach’s great Cantatas are pitted against each other: one proclaiming a celebratory view of the world alongside the other\, a more shocked view from the heavens in this spectacular concert with orchestra\, choir and soloists in one ofOxford’s most atmospheric spaces – the Chapel of New College. \nWritten a year apart from each other in 1723 and 1724\, both cantatas were written when Bach was Kantor at St Thomas’s\, Leipzig where his demanding schedule required him to write a new cantata every week. Audiences today cannot fail to be carried along by the music’s energy and dynamic forward momentum – just as the congregations of the 1720’s must have sat up in their pews when they heard this new world of music. \nAlongside these cantatas the Oxford Back Soloists will perform the motet Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf (The Spirit helps us in our weakness)\, one of Bach’s great double-choir motets.

SUMMARY:Exaudi
DESCRIPTION:Bach Cantatas for the Sunday after Ascension Day performed by the Oxford Bach Soloists \nCantata: Sie werden euch in den Bann tun (I)  BWV 44 \nCantata: Sie werden euch in den Bann tun (II) BWV 183\nMotet: Fürchte dich nicht\, ich bin bei dir BWV 228 \nTickets £10 with a free programme \nThe Sunday of Exaudi\, an appeal to listen\, marks a turning point in the church calendar. Exaudi is the name for the Sunday after the Ascension of the Lord. The Ascension is one of the great feasts in the Christian liturgical calendar\, and commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. \nJS Bach seized this opportunity to create two of his most beautiful – yet also controversial cantatas for this day in 1724 and 1725. Listen to these two very different and remarkably distinct works set to the same opening text performed in the beautifully atmospheric surroundings of New College Chapel by one of Oxford’s foremost ensembles. \nRead an interview with Oxford Bach Soloists’ director Tom Hammond Davies about the fascinating story behind this concert.

SUMMARY:Story of Easter
DESCRIPTION:J. S. Bach: Easter Oratorio BWV 249 \nJ. S. Bach: Christ lag in Todesbanden BWV 4 \nOxford Bach Soloists directed by Tom Hammond-Davies \nThe Story of Easter \nTwo contrasting works from each end of Bach’s life tell the story of one of the most crucial events in world history: The Resurrection of Christ on Easter Day. \nComposed at just 22\, Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in the snares of death) is Bach’s first cantata for Easter soon after his legendary 250 mile walking pilgrimage to hear the 68 year old organist Buxtehude play in Lübeck. At this time\, Bach was already demonstrating great ingenuity and skill in writing and playing keyboard music himself\, but this work is a significant milestone in the development of his vocal music.  \nPitted against this is Bach’s magnificent Easter Oratorio\, the last of his great Cantatas for Easter. Often overshadowed by the grand Handelian oratorio style such as Messiah\, Bach’s offering is one of the finest displays of his resourceful imagination. Telling the story of the Resurrection in only 40 mins\, it is coloured by the festal sound of trumpets and drums\, vivid solo arias and wonderfully jubilant choruses.
