SUMMARY:Pantomime Villains
DESCRIPTION:JS Bach \nNimm\, was dein ist\, und gehe hin (Take what is yours and go away)\, BWV 144\nLeichtgesinnte Flattergeister (Light-minded frivolous spirits)\, BWV 181\nGleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt (Just as the rain and snow fall from heaven)\, BWV 18 \nIn the lead up to Lent\, three cantatas based on parables: Cantata 144\, based on the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard\, reveals an alto aria with a sustained melody of great beauty; and Cantatas 181 and 18\, both based on the Parable of the Sower\, projecting dramatic scenes of spasmodic birds pecking at the scattered seed\, and a furious litany in which Bach rains fire and brimstone on the ‘pantomime villains\, the Turks and the Papists’.

SUMMARY:Calm the Storm
DESCRIPTION:JS Bach \nMein Gott\, wie lang\, ach lange? (My God\, how long\, ah! how long?)\, BWV 155\nHerr\, wie du willt\, so schicks mit mir (Lord\, as you will\, so let it be done with me)\, BWV 73\nJesus schläft\, was soll ich hoffen? (Jesus sleeps\, what shall I hope for?)\, BWV 81\nErfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde (Joyful time in the new covenant)\, BWV 83 \nCantata 155 displays the 31-year-old Bach’s enchanting innovation in his younger days with one of the finest bassoon obbligati ever written. Cantatas 73 and 81 take as their starting point two of Christ’s miracles: the healing of the leper\, and the calming of the storm. The joyful Cantata 83 is possibly Bach’s first Cantata for the feast of the Purification of Mary and the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (Candlemas) in which Simeon sings his famous Nunc dimittis.

SUMMARY:The Magi
DESCRIPTION:JS Bach \nSinget dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Sing a new song to the Lord)\, BWV 190\nSchau\, lieber Gott\, wie meine Feind (See\, dear God\, how my enemies)\, BWV 153\nSie werden aus Saba alle kommen (They will all come forth out of Sheba)\, BWV 65\nMein liebster Jesus ist verloren (My dearest Jesus is lost)\, BWV 154\nDazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes (For this the Son of God appeared)\, BWV 40 \nHot off the heels of his first Christmas in Leipzig\, Bach presents us with a vibrant set of Cantatas for the New Year and Epiphany. Cantata 190 is a paean heralding the New Year\, and Cantata 153 takes the dramatic story of Herod and the Massacre of the Innocents as its inspiration. Epiphany is ushered in as a pair of horns brings the wise men with their gifts of gold\, frankincense\, and myrrh in Cantata 65.

SUMMARY:Magnificat: Cantatas for Christmas
DESCRIPTION:** SOLD OUT ** The waiting list is now closed.** \nJS BACH \nPreise\, Jerusalem\, den Herrn (Praise the Lord\, Jerusalem)\, BWV 119 \nChristen\, ätzet diesen Tag (Christians\, engrave this day)\, BWV 63 \nSehet\, welch eine Liebe (Behold\, what a love has the Father shown to us)\, BWV 64 \nMagnificat in E flat major (with Christmas interpolations)\, BWV 243a  \nBach’s first Christmas in Leipzig comes with an explosion of festive music. After Advent’s ‘tempus clausum’ (closed period)\, Bach laid on nine major pieces for his singers and instrumentalists to master\, including the Magnificat in E flat major\, more commonly heard in its later D major version. \nFirst performed on Christmas Day in St Nicholas’s with his very grand Cantata 63\, it was repeated on St Stephen’s Day (26 Dec) in St Thomas’s. On the Third Day of Christmas Bach performed Cantata 64\, a reflection of sheer wonder and joy at the birth of Christ. \n \nSoloists for Magnificat 2019: Daniel Norman\, Cecilia Osmond\, William Purefoy\, Ben Davies (Top left to bottom right)

SUMMARY:Macmillan: A Celebration of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The Oxford Bach Soloists will be performing for the second year at the ‘A Celebration of Christmas’ concert as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s fund-raising activities. \nJoin us for a feast of carols\, seasonal choral music and literary readings from our celebrity guests Roger Allam\, Shaun Evans\, Patricia Hodge and Sally Phillips. This uplifting event promises to get you into the festive spirit and be a memorable start to your Christmas season. We recommend early booking. \nTo ensure you have a fantastic evening\, as well as our wonderful celebrity readers\, we are delighted to welcome back award winning musical director Tom Hammond-Davies who will conduct the Oxford Bach Soloists and Steven Grahl who will play the organ. Amongst the flickering candles\, a guest chorister from Christ Church Cathedral choir will bring you the spine tingling opening notes of Once in Royal David’s City and ticket holders will be entertained as they arrive in the quad by the Magdalen College School Brass Ensemble. \nNow in its 23rd year\, A Celebration of Christmas has become Macmillan’s largest single fund-raising event in Oxfordshire. The evening is organised by volunteers to raise funds to support their work locally and with your generous support last year we raised over £44\,000 towards the cost of a local Macmillan nurse. The total cost of providing a full-time nurse for one year is £53\,000\, we continue to work towards this goal and look forward to seeing you for another wonderful evening on 6th December. \nTICKETS AVAILABLE VIA THE OXFORD PLAYHOUSE WEBSITE:\n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Help My Unbelief
DESCRIPTION:CANTATAS FOR THE 19th\, 20th\, 21st\, 22nd SUNDAYS AFTER TRINITY + Exclusive pre-concert talk with Professor Henrike Lähnemann \nJS BACH \nIch elender Mensch\, wer wird mich erlösen (Wretched man that I am\, who shall deliver me)\, BWV 48\nAch! ich sehe\, itzt\, da ich zur Hochzeit gehe (Ah! I see\, now\, when I go to the wedding)\, BWV 162 \nIch glaube\, lieber Herr\, hilf meinem Unglauben (I believe\, dear Lord\, help my unbelief)\, BWV 109 \nWas soll ich aus dir machen\, Ephraim (What shall I make of you\, Ephraim)\, BWV 89 \nThe cantatas Bach was writing at this time deal with the theme of Christians rejecting the material world and its temptations so as not to risk losing union with God. Cantata 162 relates to the parable of the royal wedding feast to which ‘many are called but few are chosen’. \nThe inner conflict between belief and doubt in Cantata 109 is depicted by sharp switches between two ‘voices’ sung by the same person\, and the contrast between human imperfection and divine grace is brought out in the remarkable bass aria which opens Cantata 89. \n \nJoin Professor Henrike Lähnemann for an exclusive pre-concert talk before our concert\, Help My Unbelief\, on Sunday 3 November at 2pm in New College Chapel. The talk will be on ‘O großes Hochzeitsfest! Medieval Mysticism and Baroque Rhetoric in Cantata BWV 162′ \nWhen Bach chose the text for BWV 162 (Ach! ich sehe\, itzt\, da ich zur Hochzeit gehe)\, he picked a brand-new publication by the Weimar court composer Salomon Franck. The short talk will look behind the scenes of the fashionable cantata format to discover the medieval roots of the idea of marrying Christ\, the Reformation theology of the promise of grace and the Baroque rhetoric of such great compounds as Seelengift and Adamsrock. \nThe presentation will be interspersed with musical examples presented by the Oxford Bach Soloists to show how Bach transformed these different textual elements into a rich and colourful musical offering. \nHenrike Lähnemann is Professor of Medieval German Literature and Linguistics and works on the theology\, literature and music of the Reformation. She has cooperated with the Oxford Bach Soloists on a number of occasions\, including a trip to North Germany to return to the roots of Bach’s music. Listen to the recordings from that tour on the dedicated Music of the Reformation website. \nTo attend the pre-concert talk\, you will need to purchase a ticket for the concert\, Help My Unbelief\, which will take place immediately afterwards.

SUMMARY:Sound In My Body
DESCRIPTION:CANTATAS FOR 14th\, 15th\, 16th\, AND 17th SUNDAYS AFTER TRINITY \nJS BACH \nEs ist nichts Gesundes an meinem Leibe (There is nothing sound in my body)\, BWV 25 \nWarum betrübst du dich\, mein Herz (Why do you trouble yourself\, my heart)\, BVW 138 \nChristus\, der ist mein Leben (Christ\, he is my life)\, BWV 95 \nBringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namen (Bring to the Lord the honour due)\, BWV 148  \nThroughout the long summer and autumn Trinitarian period\, the Lutheran lectionary’s emphasis on sin and sickness in mind and body reaches full tilt in expressions such as ‘The whole world is but a hospital’ in Cantata 25. But Bach’s music is the ‘balm of Gilead’ that heals all\, above the ceaseless lament.

SUMMARY:Behold and See
DESCRIPTION:CANTATAS FOR 7th\, 8th\, 9th\, AND 10th SUNDAYS AFTER TRINITY \nJS BACH \nÄrgre dich\, o Seele\, nicht (Do not be confounded\, o soul)\, BWV 186 \nErforsche mich\, Gott\, und erfahre mein Herz (Examine me\, God\, and know my heart)\, BWV 136 \nHerr\, gehe nicht ins Gericht (Lord\, do not pass judgment on Your servant)\, BWV 105 \nSchauet doch und sehet (Behold and see\, if there be any sorrow like my sorrow)\, BWV 46  \nRecycling was very much a part of the 18th century composer’s armoury\, and Bach’s efforts were the most inventive. Cantata 186\, which started life in Weimar 1716\, is presented in its later\, expanded version. \nCantata 136 opens with one of the most confident choruses ever written. Rushing semiquaver scales skirl about the horn heralding the main tune. Bach later recycled this chorus as the ‘Cum Sancto Spiritu’ of the Lutheran Mass in A (BWV 234). \nCantata 105 holds us in breathless suspense with the most beautiful plaintive soprano aria. Cantata 46 stands unique among the two hundred cantatas for grim power and tense drama\, and its opening section came to be re-used in the B minor Mass.

SUMMARY:The Heavens are Telling
DESCRIPTION:(Photo: Chris King) \nCANTATAS FOR THE 2nd AND 4th SUNDAYS AFTER TRINITY \nJS BACH \nDie Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes (The heavens are telling the glory of God)\, BWV 76 \nEin ungefärbt Gemüte (An unblemished conscience)\, BWV 24 \nHerz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and mouth and deed and life)\, BWV 147 \nKeen to impress the congregations in Leipzig\, Bach’s first Cantatas in his new role set the bar extraordinarily high. Both Cantata 75 (for Whit Sunday) and Cantata 76 are written on a great scale consisting of 14 movements\, in two parts divided by the sermon\, and display magnificent choruses. \nCantata 24 was written and performed two weeks later\, and Cantata 147 on the Feast of the Visitation of Mary featuring two identical pastoral chorales\, famously known in the English-speaking world as Jesu\, joy of man’s desiring.

SUMMARY:Whit Sunday
DESCRIPTION:(Photo of Aimee Presswood: Motion Photo Studio) \nCANTATAS FOR WHIT SUNDAY AND 1st SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY \nJS BACH \nWeichet nur\, betrübte Schatten (Dissipate\, you troublesome shadows)\, BWV 202  – Soloist: Aimee Presswood\, \nWer mich liebet (Whoever loves me will keep my word)\, BWV 59 \nDie Elenden sollen essen (The meek shall eat and be satisfied)\, BWV 75  \nBarely arrived in Leipzig\, Bach probably announced himself with Cantata 59 on Whit Sunday 1723 (16 May)\, six days before his family joined him. Eight days later\, he began his first Leipzig cantata cycle with Cantata 75. \nConsisting of 14 movements\, this expansive cantata confirms Bach’s mighty enthusiasm as he entered upon his duties. The secular Cantata 202 for solo soprano was most likely composed for a wedding. \nTraditionally thought to have been for his own wedding to Anna Magdalena in 1721\, it contains one of the most celebrated of all Bach’s arias\, Sich üben im Lieben.

SUMMARY:Word of Thunder
DESCRIPTION:CANTATAS FOR THE LAST SUNDAYS IN TRINITY \nJS BACH \nHöchsterwünschtes Freudenfest (Most highly desired festival of joy)\, BWV 194 \nO Ewigkeit\, du Donnerwort (O eternity\, you word of thunder)\, BWV 60 \nEs reißet euch ein schrecklich Ende (A horrible end will carry you off)\, BWV 90 \nWachet! betet! betet! wachet! (Watch! pray! pray! watch!)\, BWV 70  \nOn 2nd November 1723\, Bach was in Störmthal and performed Cantata 194 to dedicate their new organ. Full of extrovert colours\, Bach adapts the structure and style of an orchestral suite into cantata form. Easter Day falls late this year and so we bring forward the cantatas Bach wrote for the final Sundays in Trinity. \nThese dramatic works deal with the subject of Christ’s second coming as judge of the world\, and warn us to keep watch and pray (Cantata 70) or face a terrifying outcome (Cantata 90).

Bach also uses viola d’amore and viola da gamba to create special colours within the instrumental mix. \nThe narrative is led by the Evangelist with an impressive line-up including Jesus\, Pilate\, Peter\, a maid and a servant.

A firm favourite\, it depicts the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem on a donkey. \nIn December 1722 Bach was keen to leave Köthen and applied for the cantorate of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Anxious to woo the reluctant Leipzigers\, who were not particularly disposed to appoint him\, he diplomatically presented himself as a composer on quite modest lines. \nAt his audition on 7th February 1723 he performed Cantatas 22 and 23 which\, despite slim forces of oboe and strings\, contain some of the most affecting and imaginative music in the cantata repertoire.

These ‘old fashioned’ instruments\, chosen for their tender qualities\, create an exquisitely delicate intimacy. \nCantata 155\, written for the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany in 1716\, displays the 31-year-old’s enchanting innovation at the Weimar court with one of the finest bassoon obbligati ever written. \nThe secular Cantata 134a is Bach’s first extant Cantata for New Year\, written for 1st January 1719 whilst Kapellmeister in Köthen. SUMMARY:Caesar's Coin
DESCRIPTION:Antonio VIVALDI\nConcerto for 2 Cellos in G minor\, RV 531 \nArvo PÄRT\nTribute to Caesar \nJS BACH\nOrgan: Wo soll ich fliehen hin BWV 646 \nDietrich BUXTEHUDE\nCantata: Wo soll ich fliehen hin BuxWV 112 \nJS BACH\n Cantata: Nur jedem das Seine (To each his own!)\, BWV 163 \nWhen the Pharisees attempted to trap Jesus by asking him whether paying taxes to Caesar was an offence to God\, their expectation was that any response he offered would be heretical. Jesus’ answer sent them away disappointed: “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s\, and unto God the things which are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21) \nBach’s response to this Gospel passage is borne out in Cantata 163 Nur jedem das Seine (To each his own!). Scored uniquely for two obbligato cellos\, it conjures up an irresistible picture of two coin-polishers at work\, under the goading eye of the foreman\, swinging and striking their hammers. \nAlmost 282 years later to the day\, the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt set this same text in Tribute to Caesar for a cappella choir in 1997. Written in his trademark “tintinnabuli” style\, it is full of prayerful musical devotion. \nWith two cellos at our disposal\, the opportunity to perform Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Cellos is irresistible. Like so many of his concertos\, it was probably written for the all-girl orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice\, with which he was associated for some four decades. It is energetic\, lively\, but also lyrical and expressive\, the dark colours of the cello intertwining with each other and the orchestra in a uniquely attractive way. \nDietrich Buxtehude’s beautiful cantata Wo soll ich fliehen hin\, in which a sinner’s anguished soul desperately seeks refuge and is welcomed by a forgiving God\, is 18 minutes of uninterrupted rapture.

SUMMARY:Wedding Music
DESCRIPTION:JS BACH\nCantata: Ach! ich sehe\, itzt\, da ich zur Hochzeit gehe (Ah! I see\, now\, when I go to the wedding)\, BWV 162 \nOrgan: Prelude and Fugue in E flat “St Anne”\, BWV 552 \nCantata: Der Herr denket an uns (The Lord is mindful of us)\, BWV 196 \nWedding Quodlibet\, BWV 524 \nMotet: Lobet den Herrn\, alle Heiden (Praise the Lord\, all ye nations)\, BWV 230 \nBach’s cantata Ach\, ich sehe\, jetzt da ich zur Hochzeit gehe was written in Weimar and probably performed in 1716. It relates to the parable of the King’s invitation to the wedding of his son\, the libretto skilfully comparing life with a journey to a nuptial feast. It begins at first with a warning sung by a deep bass – appropriately grim in character – before breaking into lively leaps for joy on arrival at the feast. \nBach’s Prelude and Fugue in E flat major BWV 552 has become known in English-speaking countries as the “St. Anne” because of the fugue’s resemblance to the St. Anne hymn ‘O God\, Our Help in Ages Past’ by William Croft\, a hymn that Bach would not have known. Composed between 1735-36\, the Prelude and Fugue bookend Bach’s most extensive work for organ\, the Clavier-Übung III\, and was one of the four likely pieces for the final music at the wedding of Prince Edward\, Duke of Kent\, to Miss Katharine Worsley\, at York Minster in 1961. \nThe wedding for which Bach wrote the cantata Der Herr denket an uns BWV 196 was no doubt a humble one\, celebrated in the small 15th century church of the tiny village of Dornheim\, just outside Arnstadt\, and the scene for his own first wedding. It is an exhilarating work with buoyancy and brilliance\, full of optimism. Around the same time\, the humorous and coarse (!) Wedding Quodlibet was written\, possibly for his own wedding to Maria Barbara. \nThe festive motet Lobet den Herrn\, alle Heiden BWV 230 conveys praise and honour with choral fanfares and dances.

DESCRIPTION:JS BACH\nKeyboard Concerto in F major\, BWV 1057 (after Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 BWV 1049) \nJohann PACHELBEL\nChorale and 7 Partita on “Herzlich tut mich verlangen”\, P.378 \nJS BACH\nHerzlich tut mich verlangen\, BWV 727 \nKomm\, du süße Todesstunde (Come\, you sweet hour of death)\, BWV 161\n \nWhen Bach decided to transcribe his Brandenburg Concerto No. 4\, BWV 1049 into the Keyboard Concerto in F\, BWV 1057\, he created something exceptionally effective from the triple concerto for violin and two recorders. Inspired by the endless possibilities\, the harpsichord is deployed in ingenious ways with a wealth of timbres. \nBach’s Cantata Komm\, du süße Todesstunde is of indescribable charm\, the sound of two recorders characterising the peaceful\, spiritualised tone that prevails. This mournfully yet happy piece is just one of Bach’s many sermons on the hour of death\, and contains the German hymn-melody which is best known in this country\, the so-called Passion Chorale\, H. L. Hassler’s ‘Herzlich thut mich verlange’\, on which Pachelbel set his Chorale and 7 Partita.

SUMMARY:My Heart Swims in Blood
DESCRIPTION:JS Bach\nConcerto for Oboe d’amore in A major BWV 1055R \nCantata: Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut (My heart swims in blood) BWV 199\nAileen Thomson\, soprano \nAileen Thomson\, soprano \nBach’s Concerto in A major\, originally written for the Oboe d’amore\, and his solo soprano cantata Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut (My heart swims in blood) exhibit all the richness of invention of the youthful Bach. The Concerto is vivacious\, sparkling\, and deeply expressive. The Cantata\, written for the 11th Sunday after Trinity during his Weimar period\, sets a typically baroque graphic text by the Darmstadt court librarian Georg Christian Lehms\, portraying mankind tormented by his consciousness of sin. The Gospel reading for the day tells the parable of the Pharisee and the publican\, and this cantata captures the humility\, shame\, and remorse of the publican in a way that only Johann Sebastian Bach could. In spite of its somewhat alarming title\, the work is tender and charming with the most exquisite and memorable melodies.
