But Bach’s music is the ‘balm of Gilead’ that heals all\, above the ceaseless lament.

DESCRIPTION:CANTATAS FOR 7th\, 8th\, 9th\, AND 10th SUNDAYS AFTER TRINITY \nJS BACH \nÄrgre dich\, o Seele\, nicht (Do not be confounded\, o soul)\, BWV 186 \nErforsche mich\, Gott\, und erfahre mein Herz (Examine me\, God\, and know my heart)\, BWV 136 \nHerr\, gehe nicht ins Gericht (Lord\, do not pass judgment on Your servant)\, BWV 105 \nSchauet doch und sehet (Behold and see\, if there be any sorrow like my sorrow)\, BWV 46  \nRecycling was very much a part of the 18th century composer’s armoury\, and Bach’s efforts were the most inventive. Cantata 186\, which started life in Weimar 1716\, is presented in its later\, expanded version. \nCantata 136 opens with one of the most confident choruses ever written. Rushing semiquaver scales skirl about the horn heralding the main tune. Bach later recycled this chorus as the ‘Cum Sancto Spiritu’ of the Lutheran Mass in A (BWV 234). \nCantata 105 holds us in breathless suspense with the most beautiful plaintive soprano aria. Cantata 46 stands unique among the two hundred cantatas for grim power and tense drama\, and its opening section came to be re-used in the B minor Mass.

Both Cantata 75 (for Whit Sunday) and Cantata 76 are written on a great scale consisting of 14 movements\, in two parts divided by the sermon\, and display magnificent choruses. \nCantata 24 was written and performed two weeks later\, and Cantata 147 on the Feast of the Visitation of Mary featuring two identical pastoral chorales\, famously known in the English-speaking world as Jesu\, joy of man’s desiring.

Eight days later\, he began his first Leipzig cantata cycle with Cantata 75. \nConsisting of 14 movements\, this expansive cantata confirms Bach’s mighty enthusiasm as he entered upon his duties. The secular Cantata 202 for solo soprano was most likely composed for a wedding. \nTraditionally thought to have been for his own wedding to Anna Magdalena in 1721\, it contains one of the most celebrated of all Bach’s arias\, Sich üben im Lieben.

(Watch! pray! pray! watch!)\, BWV 70  \nOn 2nd November 1723\, Bach was in Störmthal and performed Cantata 194 to dedicate their new organ. Full of extrovert colours\, Bach adapts the structure and style of an orchestral suite into cantata form. Easter Day falls late this year and so we bring forward the cantatas Bach wrote for the final Sundays in Trinity. \nThese dramatic works deal with the subject of Christ’s second coming as judge of the world\, and warn us to keep watch and pray (Cantata 70) or face a terrifying outcome (Cantata 90).

Complete with 11 movements\, the story takes us from darkness to blazing light. This journey from grief to joy is echoed in Bach’s dramatic Easter Oratorio. Told by four characters Mary Magdalene\, Mary Jacobe\, Simon Peter\, and John the Apostle\, it canters to the end in triumphant victory.

(Doors open at 12.30pm). \nEvangelist: Ben Johnson\nChrist: Humphrey Thompson\nPilate: Tom Lowen \nOne of Bach’s best loved works\, the St John Passion was first performed on Good Friday of 1724 in the St. Nicholas Church\, Leipzig. ‘More daring\, forceful and poetic’ than the St Matthew Passion\, according to Schumann\, this operatic work is presented by an ensemble of soloists\, four-part choir\, strings and basso continuo together with pairs of flauti traversi and oboes doubling on oboe da caccia. Bach also uses viola d’amore and viola da gamba to create special colours within the instrumental mix. \nThe narrative is led by the Evangelist with an impressive line-up including Jesus\, Pilate\, Peter\, a maid and a servant.

DESCRIPTION:Will Anderson\, tenor\, Choral Scholar 2018-19 \nJS BACH \nHimmelskönig\, sei willkommen (King of Heaven\, welcome)\, BWV 182 \nJesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe (Jesus gathered the twelve to Himself)\, BWV 22 \nDu wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn (You true God and Son of David)\, BWV 23  \nDuring his Weimar years\, Bach performed his Palm Sunday Cantata 182 no less than three times. A firm favourite\, it depicts the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem on a donkey. \nIn December 1722 Bach was keen to leave Köthen and applied for the cantorate of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Anxious to woo the reluctant Leipzigers\, who were not particularly disposed to appoint him\, he diplomatically presented himself as a composer on quite modest lines. \nAt his audition on 7th February 1723 he performed Cantatas 22 and 23 which\, despite slim forces of oboe and strings\, contain some of the most affecting and imaginative music in the cantata repertoire.

(My God\, how long\, ah\, how long?)\, BWV 155 \nDie Zeit\, die Tag und Jahre macht (Time\, which day and year doth make)\, BWV 134a \nUnique among Bach’s church music\, Cantata 152 for the 1st Sunday after Christmas in 1714 is scored for recorders\, viola d’amore\, viola da gamba\, and oboe. These ‘old fashioned’ instruments\, chosen for their tender qualities\, create an exquisitely delicate intimacy. \nCantata 155\, written for the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany in 1716\, displays the 31-year-old’s enchanting innovation at the Weimar court with one of the finest bassoon obbligati ever written. \nThe secular Cantata 134a is Bach’s first extant Cantata for New Year\, written for 1st January 1719 whilst Kapellmeister in Köthen. Featuring two allegorical characters\, Zeit (Time) and Göttliche Vorsehung (Divine Providence)\, they pour out blessings of fortune over Prince Leopold and his people of Anhalt-Köthen.

DESCRIPTION:Antonio VIVALDI\nConcerto for 2 Cellos in G minor\, RV 531 \nArvo PÄRT\nTribute to Caesar  \nJS BACH\nOrgan: Wo soll ich fliehen hin BWV 646 \nDietrich BUXTEHUDE\nCantata: Wo soll ich fliehen hin BuxWV 112 \nJS BACH\n Cantata: Nur jedem das Seine (To each his own!)\, BWV 163 \nWhen the Pharisees attempted to trap Jesus by asking him whether paying taxes to Caesar was an offence to God\, their expectation was that any response he offered would be heretical. Jesus’ answer sent them away disappointed: “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s\, and unto God the things which are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21) \nBach’s response to this Gospel passage is borne out in Cantata 163 Nur jedem das Seine (To each his own!). Scored uniquely for two obbligato cellos\, it conjures up an irresistible picture of two coin-polishers at work\, under the goading eye of the foreman\, swinging and striking their hammers. \nAlmost 282 years later to the day\, the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt set this same text in Tribute to Caesar for a cappella choir in 1997. Written in his trademark “tintinnabuli” style\, it is full of prayerful musical devotion. \nWith two cellos at our disposal\, the opportunity to perform Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Cellos is irresistible. Like so many of his concertos\, it was probably written for the all-girl orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice\, with which he was associated for some four decades. It is energetic\, lively\, but also lyrical and expressive\, the dark colours of the cello intertwining with each other and the orchestra in a uniquely attractive way. \nDietrich Buxtehude’s beautiful cantata Wo soll ich fliehen hin\, in which a sinner’s anguished soul desperately seeks refuge and is welcomed by a forgiving God\, is 18 minutes of uninterrupted rapture.

I see\, now\, when I go to the wedding)\, BWV 162 \nOrgan: Prelude and Fugue in E flat “St Anne”\, BWV 552 \nCantata: Der Herr denket an uns (The Lord is mindful of us)\, BWV 196 \nWedding Quodlibet\, BWV 524 \nMotet: Lobet den Herrn\, alle Heiden (Praise the Lord\, all ye nations)\, BWV 230 \nBach’s cantata Ach\, ich sehe\, jetzt da ich zur Hochzeit gehe was written in Weimar and probably performed in 1716. It relates to the parable of the King’s invitation to the wedding of his son\, the libretto skilfully comparing life with a journey to a nuptial feast. It begins at first with a warning sung by a deep bass – appropriately grim in character – before breaking into lively leaps for joy on arrival at the feast. \nBach’s Prelude and Fugue in E flat major BWV 552 has become known in English-speaking countries as the “St. Anne” because of the fugue’s resemblance to the St. Anne hymn ‘O God\, Our Help in Ages Past’ by William Croft\, a hymn that Bach would not have known. Composed between 1735-36\, the Prelude and Fugue bookend Bach’s most extensive work for organ\, the Clavier-Übung III\, and was one of the four likely pieces for the final music at the wedding of Prince Edward\, Duke of Kent\, to Miss Katharine Worsley\, at York Minster in 1961. \nThe wedding for which Bach wrote the cantata Der Herr denket an uns BWV 196 was no doubt a humble one\, celebrated in the small 15th century church of the tiny village of Dornheim\, just outside Arnstadt\, and the scene for his own first wedding. It is an exhilarating work with buoyancy and brilliance\, full of optimism. Around the same time\, the humorous and coarse (!) Wedding Quodlibet was written\, possibly for his own wedding to Maria Barbara. \nThe festive motet Lobet den Herrn\, alle Heiden BWV 230 conveys praise and honour with choral fanfares and dances.

Inspired by the endless possibilities\, the harpsichord is deployed in ingenious ways with a wealth of timbres. \nBach’s Cantata Komm\, du süße Todesstunde is of indescribable charm\, the sound of two recorders characterising the peaceful\, spiritualised tone that prevails. This mournfully yet happy piece is just one of Bach’s many sermons on the hour of death\, and contains the German hymn-melody which is best known in this country\, the so-called Passion Chorale\, H. L. Hassler’s ‘Herzlich thut mich verlange’\, on which Pachelbel set his Chorale and 7 Partita.

DESCRIPTION:JS Bach\nConcerto for Oboe d’amore in A major BWV 1055R \nCantata: Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut (My heart swims in blood) BWV 199\nAileen Thomson\, soprano \nAileen Thomson\, soprano \nBach’s Concerto in A major\, originally written for the Oboe d’amore\, and his solo soprano cantata Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut (My heart swims in blood) exhibit all the richness of invention of the youthful Bach. The Concerto is vivacious\, sparkling\, and deeply expressive. The Cantata\, written for the 11th Sunday after Trinity during his Weimar period\, sets a typically baroque graphic text by the Darmstadt court librarian Georg Christian Lehms\, portraying mankind tormented by his consciousness of sin. The Gospel reading for the day tells the parable of the Pharisee and the publican\, and this cantata captures the humility\, shame\, and remorse of the publican in a way that only Johann Sebastian Bach could. In spite of its somewhat alarming title\, the work is tender and charming with the most exquisite and memorable melodies.

But they came close. In 1719 Bach’s work took him to Halle\, where Handel was home on a visit. Bach learned of Handel’s visit and tried meet with him\, but alas Handel had departed the day before. Ten years later\, Bach made a second attempt to contact Handel but failed again. \nThey both admired and studied with the great organist and composer\, Dietrich Buxtehude\, and a condition for the position at St Mary’s was that the successor should marry the organist’s daughter. Alas\, both Bach and Handel felt that marrying Anna Margareta was too high a price to pay…! \nHandel’s dramatic and virtuosic Dixit Dominus is his earliest surviving autograph written in Rome in 1707\, only two months after Dietrich Buxtehude had died. Bach’s solo alto Cantata for the Third Sunday in Lent\, Widerstehe doch der Sünde\, was written in Weimar between 1711 and 1714\, and begins with a strikingly dissonant chord\, warning against sin as an endowment of the devil\, outwardly attractive but deadly within. \nN.B. DESCRIPTION:JS Bach\nBarmherziges Herze der ewigen Liebe (Merciful heart of eternal love)\, BWV 185\nIch hatte viel Bekümmernis (I had much grief)\, BWV 21 \nGF Handel\nWorthy is the Lamb (from ‘Messiah’)\, HWV 56 \n“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain”\, the text also chosen to conclude Handel’s Messiah in 1741\, was the inspiration behind the final movement of Bach’s Cantata 21 Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis almost 30 years before. \nComplete with trumpets and drums\, it’s tempting to think that Handel may himself have been inspired by it\, though the two composers famously never met. \nCantata 185 Barmherziges Herze der ewigen Liebe written for the Fourth Sunday of Trinity in 1715\, shows the playful side of Bach in a piece of mild satire at the Duke of Weimar’s expense!

(Ring forth o songs\, resound\, you strings!)\, BWV 172\n O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad (O holy bath of Spirit and water)\, BWV 165 \nBach’s lavishly scored Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major is the home of the celebrated second movement often misnamed Air on a G string. The title comes from an arrangement by the late nineteenth century German violinist August Wilhelmj who transposed the work down a tone so that the part of the first violins could be played entirely on the lowest string\, the G string. \nBach’s tender and hypnotic eight-voiced motet Ich lasse dich nich\, du segnest mich denn is the earliest surviving motet of his dating from 1712 or earlier whilst he was employed by the Dukes of Weimar. \nDuring this same period at the ‘Himmelsburg’ (Castle of Heaven)\, he was to compose the effulgent cantata for Pentecost Erschallet\, ihr Lieder\, erklinget\, ihr Saiten! depicting the fiery arrival of the Holy Spirit. One year later in 1715\, the intimate O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad for Trinity Sunday was penned\, a cantata of remarkable diversity and richness in contrasts.

DESCRIPTION:JS Bach\nJohannes-Passion (St John Passion)\, BWV 245 \nEvangelist: Stefan Kennedy\nChrist: Humphrey Thompson\nPilate: George Robarts\nSoprano: Aileen Thomson\nAlto: Alexander Chance\nBaritone: Peter Norris \nOne of Bach’s best loved works\, the St John Passion was first performed on Good Friday of 1724 in the St. Nicholas Church\, Leipzig. ‘More daring\, forceful and poetic’ than the St Matthew Passion\, according to Schumann\, this operatic work is presented by an ensemble of soloists\, four-part choir\, strings and basso continuo together with pairs of flauti traversi and oboes doubling on oboe da caccia. Bach also uses viola d’amore and viola da gamba to create special colours within the instrumental mix. \nThe narrative is led by the Evangelist with an impressive line-up including Jesus\, Pilate\, Peter\, a maid and a servant.

DESCRIPTION:JS Bach\nOrchestral Suite No. 1 in C major\, BWV 1066\nAlles\, was von Gott geboren (All that is born of God)\, BWV 80a\nHimmelskönig\, sei willkommen (King of Heaven\, welcome)\, BWV 182 \nBach’s thrilling Orchestral Suite in C major\, full of surprises and unexpected fun\, is the opener to this concert which includes some of his earliest cantatas. These were composed in service to the Weimar dukes at the legendary ‘Schlosskirche’ (Castle Church). \nCantata 80a is a reconstruction of a (now lost) first version of his famous Reformation blockbuster ‘Ein feste Burg’. The intimately scored Cantata 182\, written for Palm Sunday\, points towards the events of Good Friday and Easter\, depicting the arrival of Christ riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. \n
