SUMMARY:Raynham Hall
DESCRIPTION:  \nJohann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) \nCantata 199: Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut\nCantata 170: Vergnügte Ruh\, beliebte Seelenlust\n\nEsther Brazil mezzo-soprano\nTom Hammond-Davies conductor\nHugh Cutting countertenor \nBook Tickets \nIn 1714 Johann Sebastian Bach was made Konzermeister of the Weimar court orchestra. With this appointment came the responsibility of providing a cantata\, once a month for the Sunday services in the court chapel. Though comparatively few in number Bach’s Weimar cantatas nevertheless are striking for their formal\, technical and expressive variety. The solo cantata 199 ‘Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut’\, written for the 11th Sunday after Trinity\, 12 August 1714\, is scored for a soprano voice with an orchestra consisting of an oboe\, strings and continuo. The text is concerned with repentance and is based on the appointed Gospel which tells the story of the Pharisee and the publican (Luke 18\, vv. 9-14)\, and Bach takes us on a journey across three arias\, each preceded by a recitative with unparalleled skill and affecting contrast: the first is a poignant\, grief-laden supplication\, whose expressive intensity\, contained both in the vocal and instrumental writing\, recalls Bach’s earlier masterpiece\, ‘Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis’ (BWV 21). The second\, scored for strings only\, brings Handel to mind in its broad\, sweeping gestures. The third aria\, in the character of a gigue\, is scored for oboe and strings and dispels the darkness away. \nCantata 170 ‘Vergnügte Ruh\, beliebte Seelenlust’ was written for the 6th Sunday after Trinity\, 28 July 1726. It is a solo cantata for alto\, and instead of drawing on the bible\, the text of this cantata is a free poem by Georg Christian Lehms (1711)\, based on passages from the Sermon on the Mount dealing with man’s malice\, his miserable existence and his longing for peace in death. The greatest misery comes to those who do not believe\, according to the text. In the aria ‘Wie jammern mich doch die verkehrten Herzen’ (no. 3) they have lost the very ground under their feet: Bach silences the ever‐present continuo and mounts the movement on a thin thread spun by the violins and viola (‘Bassettchen’). But perhaps the most appealing movement is the opening aria which\, as John Eliot Gardiner puts it\, is “pure enchantment\, a warm\, luxuriant dance in 6/8 in D. You can almost feel Bach’s benign smile hovering over this music\, an evocation of ‘Himmelseintracht’\, ‘the harmony of heaven’”. One sees why Bach’s eldest son\, Wilhelm Friedemann\, would have been keen to revive this aria in Halle in 1750. \nBook Tickets

SUMMARY:Bach Motets: Der Geist hilft
DESCRIPTION:Bach’s motets constitute the most perfect and gem-like set amongst his works. They lay at the heart of his work as a teacher and choir-trainer\, and grew out of a genre which the Bach family had cultivated for generations. This was the repertory that all his pupils were expected to sing and to master. Der Geist hilft is the only motet whose precise original function is documented\, for a memorial service held in the University Church of St Paul on 20 October 1729. Its airy\, concerto-type writing makes colossal demands of performers and\, through the brilliant sonorities of the double-choir\, we hear Bach’s unbounded optimism and certitude in the contemplation of death. \nBook now\nThis is the first in a series of concerts\, centring on Bach’s Motets BWV 225 – 230\, taking place between October 2022 and March 2023. More information on the next events in the series will be coming soon.

SUMMARY:Bach Motets: Lobet den Herrn
DESCRIPTION:Bach’s motets constitute the most perfect and gem-like set amongst his works. They lay at the heart of his work as a teacher and choir-trainer\, and grew out of a genre which the Bach family had cultivated for generations. This was the repertory that all his pupils were expected to sing and to master. \nLobet den Herrn\, alle Heiden was first published only in 1821 from a manuscript attributed to ‘Signor Bach’. It sets the whole of Psalm 117\, and may have been performed—as his other motets—in a memorial service of some kind. The piece’s festive character would not have been out of place: the idea of death as a goal and joyful release from earthly problems was common in German literary and theological writings at the beginning of the eighteenth century. In this motet\, we hear Bach’s unbounded optimism and certitude in the contemplation of death. \nBook now\nThis is the second in a series of concerts\, centring on Bach’s Motets BWV 225 – 230\, taking place between October 2022 and March 2023. SUMMARY:Bach Motets: Fürchte dich nicht
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Bach Soloists\nTom Hammond-Davies (conductor)\nMagda Loth-Hill (violin)\nGeorge Clifford (violin)\nRosie Moon (violone\, double bass)\nDónal McCann (organ) \n\n \nBach’s motets constitute the most perfect and gem-like set amongst his works. They lay at the heart of his work as a teacher and choir-trainer\, and grew out of a genre which the Bach family had cultivated for generations. This was the repertory that all his pupils were expected to sing and to master. \nIn the season after Christmas\, the Christian Church tells the story of the Magi who come from the East bringing gifts of gold\, frankincense\, and myrrh to the baby Jesus. On their way\, they greet King Herod in Jerusalem asking him where they might find the newborn “King of the Jews”. Herod became paranoid that the child would threaten his throne\, and sought to kill him\, ordering the massacre of all the first-born in the land. But\, with the help of an angel\, Mary\, Joseph\, and the child make their escape to Egypt. \nThis story is told in one of the oldest Latin hymns A solis ortus cardine\, written in the first half of the fifth century. Our concert traces the development of this great hymn through the renaissance composers Palestrina and John Sheppard\, to Martin Luther. His adaptation Christum wir sollen loben schon (with the verse Was fürchtest du\, Feind Herodes\, sehr) became the kernel for Bach’s Cantata for the Second Day of Christmas (26 December 1724)\, Christum wir sollen loben schon BWV 121. \nHerod’s Massacre of the Innocents and the Flight into Egypt is the inspiration behind Heinrich Schütz’s vivid musical depiction of the angel appearing to Joseph in a dream warning him to flee with his family to Egypt\, as well as Bach’s Cantata for the Sunday after New Year (2 January 1724)\, Schau\, lieber Gott\, wie meine Feind BWV 153\, which reflects in general on the situation of the Christian confronted with enemies. Bach’s Motet Fürchte dich nicht\, ich bin bei dir BWV 228\, gently urges and reminds the listener not to be afraid. \nPalestrina A solis ortus cardine\nJohn Sheppard Hostis Herodes impie\nJ. S. SUMMARY:Bach Motets: Jesu\, meine Freude
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Bach Soloists\nTom Hammond-Davies (conductor)\nNick Pritchard (tenor) \n \nNick Pritchard\, tenor \nBach’s motets constitute the most perfect and gem-like set amongst his works. They lay at the heart of his work as a teacher and choir-trainer\, and grew out of a genre which the Bach family had cultivated for generations. This was the repertory that all his pupils were expected to sing and to master. \nBach’s longest and most musically complex motet\, Jesu\, meine Freude\, was the first of his motets to be recorded in 1927. It consists of 11 movements\, structured as a palindrome\, and alternates between Johann Franck’s hymn of the same name\, and biblical verses from Romans 8. No one really knows when it was written\, or why. For a long time\, scholars speculated that it may have been written for a funeral in Leipzig. But Bach scholar Christoph Wolff suggests that Bach may have composed and compiled the motet for the education of his choir in both composition techniques and theology. \nThis epic motet is flanked by two solo cantatas\, performed for us by tenor Nick Pritchard. Ich armer Mensch is Bach’s only extant cantata for tenor\, and is based on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. The singer begins by reflecting on his sinful condition\, then asks God for mercy with the words “Erbarme dich” (“Have mercy”)\, the same words used in his St Matthew Passion in Peter’s aria regretting his denial of Jesus. \nIch habe genug is one of the most recorded and performed of Bach’s sacred cantatas. The opening aria and so-called “slumber aria” are regarded as some of the most inspired creations of Bach\, and much-loved by his wife\, Anna Magdalena\, who copied it out in her Notebook. \nJ. S. Bach Cantata: Ich habe genug BWV 82a\nJohann Gottfried Walther Organ: Partita sopra ‘Jesu\, meine Freude’\nJ. S. Bach Motet: Jesu\, meine Freude BWV 227\nJ. S. SUMMARY:Pre-Concert Talk: The St John Passion as Protestant Drama
DESCRIPTION:How does Johann Sebastian Bach’s music for the St John Passion respond to the text? While the Passion was first performed 300 years ago\, the text in parts dates back 200 years earlier\, to the time of the Reformation: Luther’s translation of the New Testament was first published in 1522 and the first ever printed hymn-book in 1524. This pre-concert talk will focus on how these older textual elements and contemporary pietist writing are fused together in Bach’s dramatic staging of the Passion. We will explore the history behind the hymns through live musical examples and communal singing\, including how they provide turning points in the story told by the Evangelist and the choir\, and in the reflections offered by the soloists. \nHenrike Lähnemann is Professor of Medieval German Literature and Linguistics and has worked with the Oxford Bach Soloists on the Reformation’s heritage and the theological and literary background of Bach’s sacred music. With editorial input by Dr Kathrin Lüddecke. \n\n\n\n(Image: beginning of the Gospel according to St John in Martin Luther’s translation of the New Testament\, September 1522\, fol. 65r)

SUMMARY:Shall We Gather at the River
DESCRIPTION:For more than 400 years\, the Black American spiritual tradition has moved over\, across\, and through the waters—waters of life force\, passage\, cleansing\, resistance\, and renewal—depicted in such songs and verses as “Wade in the Water\,” “Deep River\,” “Crossing Jordan\,” and “By the Waters of Babylon.” \nThe power of water and its spiritual dimensions equally resonates in the beautiful\, sacred texts of Bach’s cantatas. Infused with poetry\, Bach’s music sounds and speaks to every drop of water\, in drought and in full flood\, moving and alive. \nThese two musical sources flow together in an act of awakening\, mobilization\, and restorative beauty in the face of climate change. The Oxford Bach Soloists under the music direction of Tom Hammond-Davies and The Choir of Trinity Wall Street are joined by countertenor Reginald Mobley\, tenor Nick Pritchard\, and sheng player Wu Tong to perform a selection of Bach cantatas intermingled with spirituals in a staging by the celebrated director Peter Sellars. This musical call to action illuminates the undeniable truth that water is life\, and that music is a universal language that can unite and inspire. \nThis program is co-commisioned with Park Avenue Armory as part of the COAL + ICE exhibition and series of programs at Asia Society\, Feb. 13-Aug. 11\, 2024\, designed to provoke thought and action on climate change. \n\nSoprano Molly Quinn\nCountertenor Reginald Mobley\nTenor Nick Pritchard\nBass-baritone Jonathan Woody\nSheng Wu Tong\nOxford Bach Soloists\nThe Choir of Trinity Wall Street\nConductor Tom Hammond-Davies\nDirection Peter Sellars\nChoreographer Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray and members of the flexn community\nLighting Designer Seth Reiser\nSound Design Mark Grey

SUMMARY:Bach Partitas: No. 6 in E minor
DESCRIPTION:J.S. Bach’s partitas BWV 825-830\, the first of which is the composer’s self-proclaimed Opus 1\, form part of his Clavier-Übung I that was published in 1731. There is a substantial body of evidence that suggest that these works were rather popular when first published\, something that we believe remains true today. These six works for keyboard exist as part Bach’s hefty compositional corpus\, and are all functional\, bespoke\, and beautiful. \nJoin us for a celebratory afternoon as we bring our Partitas series to a conclusion. This concert marks a significant moment\, the final performance with OBS before Founder and Artistic Director\, Tom Hammond-Davies\, embarks on a new journey in Dallas\, Texas. Come and celebrate our remarkable journey and the future that lies ahead! \n\nCantata: Nach dir\, Herr\, verlanget mich (BWV 150)\nKeyboard Partita No. 6 (BWV 830)\nAria: Bekennen will ich seinen Namen (BWV 200)\nCantata: Der Friede sei mit dir (BWV 158)\n\nNach dir\, Herr\, verlanget mich (BWV 150) is filled with youthful vigour and profound spirituality. It is possibly Bach’s earliest extant Cantata\, and showcases the early development of his unique voice. The themes of longing and divine support set a contemplative tone and is one of the most treasured Cantatas in the canon. \nThe intricate and virtuosic Partita No. 6 in E minor (BWV 830)\, with its demanding technical passages and emotional depth\, serve as a bridge between the sacred vocal works and the instrumental brilliance that Bach so masterfully combined. \nThe short aria for solo alto\, Bekennen will ich seinen Namen (BWV 200)\, is a poignant and intimate piece that delves into personal faith and proclamation. This work\, with its delicate orchestration and expressive vocal line\, serves as a lyrical interlude that connects the grandeur of the larger works with individual expression of devotion. \nThe concert concludes with an Easter Cantata for solo bass\, Der Friede sei mit dir (BWV 158)\, bringing a message of peace. Its reflective and optimistic nature provides a fitting and heartfelt farewell.

SUMMARY:Bach: Nun Komm
DESCRIPTION:Join the Oxford Bach Soloists for Nun Komm\, a special Advent concert featuring two of J.S. Bach’s cantatas inspired by the hymn Nun komm\, der Heiden Heiland (“Come now\, Saviour of the gentiles”). This hymn\, beloved during the Advent season\, serves as the foundation for both BWV 62 and BWV 36. \n \nOxford Bach Soloists\nDirected by Eamonn Dougan\nWith Emilia Bertolini\, William Purefoy\, Oscar Golden-Lee\, and Ben Davies \nIn BWV 62\, Bach weaves Martin Luther’s 1524 hymn melody throughout both the instrumental and vocal textures with characteristic invention and brilliance. BWV 36 also celebrates this hymn\, but with a fresh approach\, reworking material from Bach’s secular cantatas and introducing an innovative structure where chorale verses replace traditional recitatives\, creating an extended\, two-part work. \nThe concert opens with choruses filled with tremendous energy and joyful anticipation\, heralding the coming of the Saviour. Through expressive arias and chorales\, the music reflects on divine wonders\, the majesty of God\, and the blessings promised to the faithful as we prepare for the birth of Christ. As the hymn urges\, “Laßt die süße Musica ganz freudenreich erschallen” – “Let the sweet music ring out full of joy.” \nJoin us on Sunday\, 1st December at 2:30 pm at St John the Evangelist Church\, Oxford\, and experience the beauty of Bach’s Advent music.
