Virtual Easter Festival
Friday 2 April 2021, 3:00 pm - Friday 30 April 2021, 11:30 pm

We are delighted to be broadcasting our first ever Easter Festival online this April. Ticket holders will be treated to an unmissable online experience and bringing the beauty of Bach to the comfort of their own homes across the Easter weekend.
The festival will deliver five hours of brand-new music recorded on location in the beautiful and wonderfully acoustic, Christ Church Cathedral and New College Chapel – both in Oxford. The performances will be streamed at 3pm over four consecutive days: Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday.

The different proportions of Christ Church Cathedral and New College Chapel perfectly suit the demands of the music, whilst maintaining all necessary health measures. New College Chapel has hosted Oxford Bach Soloists for several live events, and under the current health measures it suits a smaller-scale repertoire such as Christ lag in Todesbanden. Christ Church Cathedral offers more space, and so can accommodate the larger-scale pieces such as St John Passion and the Easter Oratorio.
Working with celebrated Director Thomas Guthrie, the weekend promises a 360-degree experience of the music of Bach through brand new staging which reflects OBS’s distinctive approach.
3pm, Friday 2nd April St John Passion
3pm, Saturday 3rd April BWV 4 Christ lag in Todesbanden with a special lecture from renowned German Mediaevalist Henrike Lähnemann.
3pm, Sunday 4th April Easter Oratorio
3pm, Monday 5th April BWV 31 Der Himmel lacht! Die Erde jubilieret
Performances will be available to view on demand until 11pm on 30 April 2021
