Tell us a bit about yourself, and your training to date.
I first started singing as a chorister at Westminster Cathedral. After an organ scholarship at Christ’s Cambridge I benefitted from several training schemes such as Genesis Sixteen and the Ex Cathedra scholars programme and have since spent time freelancing in London.
What attracted you to the Oxford Bach Soloists?
I was attracted to OBS mainly because I am enthusiastic about Bach’s music and because of the solo opportunities that it provides. As I am not a German speaker the extensive German language coaching also appealed to me as a way to get to grips with the meaning and pronunciation of the texts which we sing.
What are you most looking forward to as an OBS choral scholar?
I am most looking forward to the concerts at Easter as the St John Passion is one of my favourite of Bach’s works. The Easter Oratorio on the other hand is not one that I know at all so it will be fun to discover a new piece of music.
What do you see as the value of ensembles like OBS to young aspiring musicians?
OBS provides young singers with the chance to perform Bach’s works with a period orchestra and extensive interpretative training for each concert. The demands of Bach’s solos are great and varied and performing them regularly is a great way to develop good habits for solo singing.
